After the language screen, press START at the title and choose New Game; choose Password instead only when continuing with a five-character room code. The introduction leads directly into Room 1, the Kitchen. Follow the trail of cheese and read each on-screen instruction before acting: this opening room teaches the first context-sensitive challenges while Tom tries to recover the stolen cheese. Complete every short challenge in the room to advance on the house map; later passwords resume at specific Kitchen, Living Room, Game Room, Bedroom, Back Yard, or Dining Room checkpoints. Watch the prompt rather than assuming the same move each time, because the game changes the assigned action from one mini-game to the next.

Use the D-Pad to move Jerry and to highlight menu or password characters. In gameplay, B is normally the immediate jump or object-attack button, but the exact action changes with the current mini-game. A, L, and R perform the other context-sensitive actions shown by the on-screen instruction for that challenge; for example, different chase, throwing, and balancing scenes assign them differently. START pauses during play. On menu and password screens, follow the displayed button icons to confirm or go back. There is no single fixed attack layout for every room, so read the instruction card shown before each new challenge.
