At the Main Menu, choose New Game to begin or Continue to enter a level password. The game has no mid-level save: reaching a new level reveals a four-letter password. On the Password screen, move through letters with the D-Pad, press A to enter one, B to erase, and START after a valid code to begin that level from its start. The opening level begins at the foot of a Swedish mountain. Head right, climb the cliffs, deal with the wolves, use switches and ledges, and reach the plateau doorway. Near drops, use B for a safety drop instead of running blindly; reserve an L-assisted sprint jump for the longest gaps.

Menus: D-Pad selects, A confirms, B backs out. D-Pad moves Lara in eight directions (she runs rather than walks); A jumps straight up, D-Pad+A jumps in that direction, and L+D-Pad+A makes the longest sprint jump. B activates switches, picks up objects, or performs a safety drop at an edge. While hanging, Up pulls up, Down drops, and Left/Right shimmies. R draws/holsters weapons; with weapons drawn, B fires and jumps are shorter. SELECT opens inventory; use Left/Right to browse, A to use/equip, and SELECT to close. START opens the pause menu; Up/Down chooses Continue or Quit and A confirms. For Golden Guns, hold B to charge and release to fire.
