Press START, choose Story on the main menu and make your skater to start as an unknown teenager aiming for the pro circuit. The opening area is New Jersey, outside your house. Skate east to Benny and press L to speak to him. In the first Learning Stats Tutorial, raise the Rail stat by grinding for two seconds: hold B, release to ollie towards the wooden rail beside Benny, press A in the air and keep the balance marker centred with Left/Right. The first four New Jersey goals must be completed in order; more jobs then become available. If a tutorial requirement is unclear, check START → Skater Progress → Stats. Helmet and pads from the pause-menu Skate Shop reduce the risk of a hard fall failing a goal.

Up/Down on the D-Pad accelerates or slows, while Left/Right turns. Menus use Up/Down, A to choose and B to go back. Hold B to crouch, then release for an ollie. While airborne, press L plus a direction for a flip trick or R plus a direction for a grab; on the ground, tap L for nollie stance or R for switch stance. Press A near a rail, edge or lip to grind or wallride, balancing grinds with Left/Right and lip tricks with Up/Down. Tap Down-Up or Up-Down on the ground to manual and balance with Up/Down. Press R as you land to revert. Hold Down until you step off the board, hold A to run, steer with Left/Right and press B to jump or remount; to link through running, jump during a combo and tap A twice in the air. Press L beside a goal character to talk, and START pauses.
