Press START on the title screen, choose New Game, then select The Aptitude Test and Stage 1: Enter the Chemical Factory. Your first task is to reach the laboratory: head right after Jerry's briefing, study the searchlight pattern and cross only when a gap opens. At the minefield, press R to control the Bug-Tronic, steer it past the beams and press R again at the green computer; Sam's goggles will then show the mines so she can cross safely. Touching a beam before the gadget checkpoint restarts the stage, so let each moving light complete a sweep before committing. Completing the stage opens the next one and automatically saves your progress.

Menus: use the Control Pad to highlight an option, A to confirm and B to return; START proceeds from the title to the main menu. START pauses play. Horizontal stages: Left/Right moves, Up and Down provide stage-specific movement, and Down may crouch or release a pipe/ledge. A jumps and a second A in mid-air double-jumps. B punches; where supported, three presses make a quick combo. R activates gadgets at key points. Once acquired, L fires the grappling hook; press A to let go and quickly press L again to advance across overhead pipes. Vertical stages: Left/Right moves sideways, Up slows the descent, Down moves lower and R triggers an event. During safe hacking, A, B, L and R stop their corresponding gauges. Vehicle stages use Up/Down to move and A for the special weapon when one is available. The manual lists no play function for SELECT.
