Press START at the title screen, choose New Game, then select The Aptitude Test and Stage 1: Enter the Chemical Factory. Your first objective is to reach the laboratory: move right after Jerry's briefing, wait for gaps in the searchlights, and cross without touching their beams. At the minefield, press R to take control of the Bug-Tronic, guide it past the lights, and press R again at the green computer; the goggles will then reveal the mines so Sam can cross. A beam hit before the gadget checkpoint restarts the stage, so watch one full sweep before moving. Finishing the stage unlocks the next one and saves progress automatically.

Menus: Control Pad highlights an option, A confirms, B returns to the previous screen, and START opens the main menu from the title. START pauses during play. Horizontal stages: Left/Right moves, Up and Down have stage-specific movement functions, and Down can also crouch or drop from a pipe/ledge. A jumps; press A again in the air to double-jump. B punches; in supported stages, press it three times for a quick combo. R uses a gadget at marked points. After obtaining the grappling hook, L fires it; press A to release and quickly press L again to move between overhead pipes. Vertical stages: Left/Right moves sideways, Up slows the descent, Down moves lower, and R triggers an event. Safe hacking uses A, B, L, and R to stop their matching gauges. Vehicle stages use Up/Down to move and A to fire a special weapon when available. The manual assigns no play action to SELECT.
