How to Play World Champ

Quick start

Choose RANKING, name your boxer, and begin in TRAINING. On the ranking screen, SELECT switches between TRAINING and RANKING, so practice and improve your stats before requesting an official bout. Build Speed, Stamina, Defense and Punch together instead of overinvesting in one category. In the ring, move into range and watch your facing: when square to the opponent, Up+A throws an uppercut, Down+A a body blow, and Left/Right+A a straight. Use B to defend rather than trading every punch. At the punch-allocation screen, move between punch types with Up/Down, add points with Right, remove them with Left, and press START to enter the bout.

Controls

D-pad: move around the ring. While facing the opponent head-on, Left/Right+A throws a straight, Down+A a body blow, and Up+A an uppercut. While facing at an angle, Left/Right+A throws a hook and Up/Down+A throws a straight. A: offense combined with a direction. B: defensive block or sway selected for the incoming attack. START: pause during a bout; begin the bout after punch allocation. SELECT on the Ranking screen: switch TRAINING/RANKING. Punch allocation: Up/Down selects a punch, Right adds points, and Left removes points. The checked manual does not support a complete direction+B table, so no unverified defensive combinations are claimed.

World Champ — About this game

Great Boxing: Rush Up is the 1990 Japanese Famicom release of the boxing game later published overseas as World Champ. Its Ranking mode alternates training with official fights: improve Speed, Stamina, Defense and Punch, then work from lightweight through heavyweight competition. Bouts are built around movement and facing. When squared up, directional A inputs produce straights, body blows and uppercuts; at an angle, the same system changes to hooks or straights. Successful offense and defense build the Spirit meter and create knockdown opportunities. A password preserves a developed boxer, while a simultaneous two-player versus mode and a separate elimination tournament for three to eight participants support local competition.
