How to Play Iron Tank: The Invasion of Normandy

Quick start

Press START and use the opening beach to learn turret control before advancing. Move with the D-pad, then hold B and tap a direction to turn only the turret; release B and the tank can travel while the barrel keeps its heading. Use A's main cannon on armor and emplacements, and B's machine gun on infantry or light threats. When the call sign flashes, press SELECT, choose RADIO with the D-pad, and press A to read the message. Check the map at every fork. In the same subscreen, activate collected rapid-fire, explosive, armor-piercing or long-range shell effects to match the next enemy, and keep an eye on energy/fuel and reserve fuel.

Controls

D-pad: move the tank. Hold B+D-pad: rotate the turret independently in eight directions. A: fire the main cannon in the turret's direction. B: fire the machine gun. SELECT: open the subscreen or return to battle. In the subscreen, move the cursor with the D-pad and press A to choose the radio, map-related display, shell item or reserve fuel option. START: start the game; pause or resume during play. Continue screen: choose YES, NO or PASSWORD with the D-pad and confirm with A. This follows the official manual's A=cannon and B=machine gun layout; secondary pages that reverse those buttons were rejected.

Iron Tank: The Invasion of Normandy — About this game

Great Tank is the Japanese Famicom version of SNK's 1988 top-down action shooter released in North America as Iron Tank. Colonel Ralf Jones lands ahead of the main Normandy force and drives toward the enemy's Think Tank weapon. The vehicle and its eight-direction turret are controlled separately, allowing the player to retreat, strafe or turn while keeping the gun trained on a target. The main cannon, machine gun, special shell properties and reserve fuel must be managed across a continuous battlefield with forks, mines, captives, radio reports and large bosses. SELECT opens a tactical subscreen where the map, messages and collected ammunition abilities can be checked or activated, making route choice and preparation as important as reflexes.
