How to Play Guerrilla War

Quick start

Press START, choose 1 PLAYER or 2 PLAYER with SELECT or the D-pad, then press START again. Move carefully up the first area and clear enemies before touching prisoners so stray shots do not cost points. B fires the machine gun in your facing direction; A throws a grenade over sandbags and also enters a tank marked IN. Use grenades against barricades and fixed targets, and collect POW boxes dropped by red soldiers. In a tank, keep moving and use its heavier weapon, but watch for the vehicle to flash from green toward red as fuel runs out; press A to exit before it explodes. Press SELECT at any time to check score and remaining lives.

Controls

D-pad: move and face in eight directions; weapon fire follows the facing direction. B: fire the machine gun or the current launcher/flame-type upgrade. A: throw a grenade or powered explosive grenade; while standing on an IN tank, enter it; while riding, exit it. START: begin; pause or resume during play. SELECT: open the subscreen showing score and remaining lives; press again to return. Title: use SELECT or the D-pad to choose one- or two-player mode, then START. Optional construction screen: hold A or B while pressing START, use the D-pad to choose difficulty/area settings, change values with A/B, and finish with START.

Guerrilla War — About this game

Guevara is SNK's Japanese Famicom conversion of the top-down run-and-gun game localized overseas as Guerrilla War. Unlike the Western release's unnamed island and rebels, this cartridge explicitly casts Player 1 as Che Guevara and Player 2 as Fidel Castro in a campaign against Batista's regime. One or two players move and fire in eight directions through ten areas, using a machine gun and arcing grenades to break emplacements, defeat bosses and reach the palace. Prisoners award points when rescued and deduct points if caught in friendly fire. Red soldiers and hidden boxes supply launchers, flame weapons, spread shots and enhanced grenades. Tanks marked IN provide protection and heavy firepower, but their fuel expires and the vehicle must be abandoned before it explodes.
