How to Play Guerrilla War

Quick start

Press Start, choose one or two players with the cursor or Select, then press Start again. Move and aim together with the D-pad, hold or tap B for machine-gun or special-weapon fire, and use A to lob grenades over cover. Approach a tank marked IN and press A to board; press A again to leave before its fuel runs out and it flashes toward an explosion. Rescue prisoners by touching them, but stop firing first because a stray shot loses points. Destroy red or yellow soldiers and barricades for power-ups, and preserve strong weapons for bosses. Press Select to check score and remaining lives, then Select again to return. Start pauses and resumes.

Controls

D-pad: move and aim in eight directions. B: fire the machine gun or current special weapon. A: throw grenades/high-power grenades; while standing on a tank marked IN, enter it, and press A again to exit. Select: show score and remaining lives, then return to play. Start: begin, pause, and resume. On the title choice, Select or the cursor changes between one and two simultaneous players. Mine-cart bonus area: Up/Down adjusts speed, and A or B uses the rescue rope.

Guerrilla War — About this game

Guerrilla War is the North American NES localization of SNK's Guevara. One or two players move and fire in eight directions through ten vertically advancing areas, from jungle and farms to mines, cities, sewers, a base, and the dictator's palace. B fires the machine gun or collected special weapon, while A throws grenades and also boards or exits tanks. Red and yellow soldiers can reveal power-ups; tanks offer stronger firepower until their fuel expires. Rescued prisoners award 1,000 points, but accidentally killing one costs 500, so clear nearby fire before approaching. Each area ends with a boss, and the fifth includes a mine-cart rescue sequence. The US story removes the Japanese version's explicit Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and Cuban Revolution identities, presenting generic rebels and an island dictator instead.
