How to Play The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout
Quick start
Press START and use the opening grassland to learn the mallet's limited reach; swing before an enemy touches Bugs instead of standing directly beside it. Collect carrots whenever the route is safe, because each carrot leaves a temporary-looking but solid WB platform and the total can buy attempts in bonus games. Use Up or Down on ladders and trees, and press Down at rabbit holes, pipes, drums, stumps, or vases to enter a passage. Hearts refill health, and a large carrot ends the round. In seesaw sections, strike the raised end with the mallet to launch Bugs upward. Do not rush through blind drops: later rounds add crumbling floors, spikes, falling objects, and conveyor belts.
Controls
D-pad Left/Right: walk. D-pad Up/Down: climb ladders, trees, and similar structures. D-pad Down: enter rabbit holes, pipes, oil drums, tree stumps, and vases when positioned at an entrance. A: jump; also choose a number or strike in applicable bonus rounds. B: swing the mallet; also choose or strike in bonus rounds. START: begin the game and pause or resume play. SELECT: the original NES manual and dedicated guides assign no gameplay function, so none is claimed here.
The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout — About this game
Happy Birthday Bugs is the Japanese Famicom edition of Kemco's single-player side-scrolling platform game celebrating Bugs Bunny's 50th anniversary. Bugs has been invited to a party in his honor, but jealous Looney Tunes characters fill the route with enemies, traps, and boss encounters. Six themed worlds contain four rounds apiece, for 24 rounds in all. Bugs jumps, climbs, enters holes and containers, and swings a mallet that can defeat enemies, break certain blocks, or interact with stage devices. Carrots are more than collectibles: taking one leaves a WB-marked foothold that may help reach another platform, and saved carrots can be spent in bonus games for extra lives. Hearts restore health, while a giant carrot marks a round's exit. This entry is specifically the August 1990 Japanese cartridge titled Happy Birthday Bugs, not the later US or European package title.
