How to Play Rainbow Islands

Quick start

In the opening island, practice A to jump and B to draw an arc in front of Bubby. Walk onto a rainbow from the side to gain height. Hold A when landing if you want to bounce onward; otherwise you can break the arc onto an enemy below. Keep making short, safe steps toward the top and collect the diamonds enemies leave behind.

Controls

Left/right move Bubby and let him walk up or down rainbows. A jumps; B makes a rainbow. Hold A to keep bouncing on an arc rather than crushing it. A rainbow can be broken by landing on it or hitting it from below. In the Japanese release, START at game over continues from the round where play ended. Controller 2 is not used.

Rainbow Islands — About this game

Rainbow Islands turns platforming into a problem you can solve by building your own route. Bubby's rainbows strike enemies, bridge awkward gaps, and collapse onto creatures below when broken. Holding the jump button lets you bounce across an arc rather than immediately smashing it, opening up faster ways to gain height. The Japanese Famicom game has its own layouts across seven main worlds, with a boss after each set of four rounds. Pickups alter your options, while colored diamonds encourage you to do more than race straight to the exit. It is a single-player adaptation, distinct from Ocean's European NES game.
