How to Play Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2

Quick start

Press START, choose one or two players, and move with the D-pad. Press A to jump and B to create a rainbow. Use rainbows as steps to reach higher ledges, then jump on or break them to strike enemies below. Keep climbing before the water rises, collect food for points, and try to pick up the seven coloured gems in order. In two-player mode, players alternate after a life is lost.

Controls

D-pad Left/Right: move; Down: drop through suitable platforms or crouch where supported. A: jump. B: create a rainbow; a rainbow can be used as a platform and collapsed by contact or jumping on it. START: begin and pause/resume. SELECT: choose one or two players on the title screen (inferred).

Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 — About this game

Rainbow Islands: Bubble Bobble 2 is Ocean’s European NES adaptation of Taito’s vertical platform game. Bubby climbs seven themed islands while the screen scrolls upward and water threatens from below. Rainbows work both as weapons and temporary platforms: fire one at an enemy, step onto it, or collapse it to damage foes underneath. Collecting the seven differently coloured gems in the correct order can open secret rooms and improve the ending. This Ocean version supports one or two players taking turns and does not use the held-jump bouncing behaviour found in the other NES conversion.
