How to Play Rainbow Islands

Quick start

Press START to begin. Move left or right, jump with A, and cast a rainbow with B. On safe ground, try walking onto the side of an arc before using it to reach a higher platform. Make a rainbow above an enemy and land on it to try a falling attack. Gather differently colored diamonds as you work towards the top rather than waiting around for every item.

Controls

Left/right moves Bubby and walks him up or down a rainbow. A jumps and advances on-screen text. B creates a rainbow. START begins play or pauses it; SELECT is unused. Walking onto an arc gives you a path, while jumping onto it can break it and hit enemies underneath.

Rainbow Islands — About this game

In the U.S. NES Rainbow Islands, Bubby must gather large diamonds to undo the spell on his island home. His rainbows are as useful for travel as for fighting: walk up an arc to reach a ledge, put one in a foe's path, or smash it so it falls onto an enemy below. Each world contains four stages, with treasure and power-ups along the climb. Small colored diamonds carry letters that spell RAINBOW, making collection part of the larger objective rather than just a score bonus. You cannot linger forever, since the islands eventually sink. This is Taito's NES adaptation, with layouts different from the European Ocean release.
