Press START on the title screen, choose New Game from the main menu, and let the initial dream take you to level 1, Diesel Dreaming. The first section is a race against the clock with the car: follow the marked circuit, collect speed stars and avoid obstacles to the finish line. Then move on to 2D platforms; Read each of Mrs. Puff's panels, recover SpongeBob's lost license, and gather the pieces needed to rebuild the car and win the next races. The GBA version switches between platforming, driving, flying, chases, and phases with Giant Plankton, so check the outline that appears when you start each mode. Snooze Winks restore some health, Extra Player icons give you a life, and Secret Mini-Game unlock games in the Arcade.

Menus: D-pad to move the cursor, A to confirm, B to return and START to pause. 2D platforms: D-pad to move, A to jump and B to attack or use the nearby object. The panels teach additional techniques for each character, such as the weak wall-breaking/block-pushing charge and the ground slam for pushbuttons; executes the combination shown. Driving: D-pad to steer, A to accelerate, B to brake and the indicated turbo button uses the speed resource. Flight/Pursuit: D-pad to dodge in the indicated direction and action button displayed to shoot or interact. Giant Plankton and the Arcade minigames show their own controls at the beginning.
