At the title screen, press START, choose New Game from the main menu, then let the opening dream take you to level 1, Diesel Dreaming. The first sequence is a timed hot rod race: follow the track, take the speed stars and avoid obstacles until the finish. The level then switches to 2D platforming; read each of Mrs. Puff's signs, find Bob's lost license, then collect the machine parts needed to rebuild the car and win the next races. The rules change between platforming, driving, flying, chasing and sequences with giant Plankton: so always consult the diagram displayed at the start of each phase. Snooze Winks restore some health, Extra Player icons grant a life, and Secret Mini-Game icons open games in the Arcade.

Menus: directional cross to move the cursor, A to validate, B to return and START to pause. 2D phases: directional cross to move, A to jump, B to attack or use the nearby object. Panels explain additional character-specific techniques, including the charge that breaks weak walls/pushes blocks and the ground attack that activates switches: reproduce the combination displayed. Driving: cross to steer, A to accelerate, B to brake, then the turbo button indicated by the tutorial. Flight and pursuit: cross to avoid obstacles in the announced direction and action button displayed to shoot or interact. Giant Plankton and the mini-games still have their own controls, shown at the start of the sequence.
