At the title screen, press START, start a new game then choose Easy or Normal difficulty. Easy is best suited for a first game; in Normal, characters are much less resistant to hits. After Gill's announcement about the disappearance of the Mermaid Man and Hermit Crab, enter Mermalair 1-1 and choose Bob, Patrick, Sandy or Carlo. The first objective is to cross this level of platforms to find the two heroes, while learning to jump, attack and change characters in front of the jellyfish and clams. Switch to another hero with L depending on the obstacle: Bob can slow his fall by inflating himself, Patrick breaks blocks with a ground attack, Sandy crosses the spikes and Carlo performs a double jump. Collect the Gold Stars that are accessible without danger; they are then used to buy lives and mini-games in Gill's caravan.

Directional cross: move through levels and navigate menus. A: skip or validate. B: attack or cancel. L: change character during a level. R: use the active character's special action. START: Pause the game and open the pause menu. SELECT: Move from one menu screen to another when this function is available. Driving, cooking, chasing, and pacing sequences may employ other actions: follow the directions on the screen.
