Choose NEW GAME on the title screen and press A; CONTINUE becomes available after the automatic save has created data. Follow the opening dialogue to the Shop, take one of the Starter Deck packs and use the starting 3,000 Duelist Points only after checking what the deck still needs. In town, walk up to a duelist and press R to challenge them. Begin with unnamed opponents or Tea rather than Joey or the dog, build a reliable 40-card deck, and spend the first week earning cards and Duelist Points—the weekend tournament cannot be entered during that first week. When registration opens, go to the Coliseum and work toward winning the weekend tournament and the other trophy events.

D-pad: move on the Field Screen, switch items, move the cursor and scroll text. A: confirm, open menus, send messages, and on the field open a submenu, talk or examine. B: cancel/return; during a duel open the phase-completion menu. R: challenge a character on the field; during a duel read card information or draw in the Draw Phase; in Edit Deck add one card. L: in Edit Deck remove one card. START: during a duel open the Options menu. On the password screen, L moves back one digit and R forward one digit; on activation-timing prompts, R marks all items Confirmed and L marks all Unconfirmed.
